Winter Haven
If you want to get away from Old Man Winter’s cold touch, and go to a place that’s warm, then Winter Haven, Florida is the perfect place to go. The weather in Winter Haven is almost always warm, and has a tropical feel to it. And because of these great temperatures, Winter Haven is a stunning paradise of flowers and citrus trees. Also located in Winter Haven is the exquisite Bok Sanctuary.
This historic sanctuary was a gift to the people of America from Edward Bok. Located in the sanctuary is the carillon tower. This 295 foot tower is a masterfully constructed work of iron art. Music can be heard ringing from the tower every half-hour. It is home to 57 bronze bells that weight as little as 17 pounds or, unbelievably, as much as 12 tons. Yes, you read that right; 12 tons. The tower sits on 157 acres of beautiful land that is adorned with majestic gardens. The Pinewood Estate is also located on the grounds of the Bok Sanctuary.
The estate is a 20 room Mediterranean revival-style mansion that is one of Florida’s best preserved structures representing this form architecture. Take a walk through the halls and rooms and be transported to another world. The mansion is open for public viewing annually, between October and May. Winter Haven is most noted for its watery acreage, however.
There are 50 lakes, 24 of which are connected to each other by a canal system. These beautiful interconnecting lakes are known as the “Chain of Lakes” and are magnificent. You can go golfing on lush greens, and go boating, fishing, and water skiing here as well. There a great places to eat, from the little hole in the wall that serves the best burger you’ve ever tasted to the fine dining restaurants where you can sample some of Florida’s delicious seafood.
There’s no getting around it. Winter Haven, Florida is the perfect get away for anyone that wants a little variety on their next vacation.
