The Museum of Seminole County History
The Museum of Seminole County History is located only four miles south of Sanford in highway 17/92. The museum is a collection of artifacts, exhibits, maps, documents and photographs that capture and showcase a glimpse into Seminole County’s past.
The museum is a self-guide tour museum so you can take as long as you like to look at all there is to see.
Seminole County, called the gateway to interior Central Florida by way of the St. John’s River, is embedded deep in the history of this area. This becomes prevalent in the artifacts and other unique items found in the museum.
You’ll see Native American Indian artifacts, early forts and settlements, you can discover how the development of rail and steamship transportation took place, and you can get a glimpse into what it was like to live in Seminole County during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The museum is situated on 2 acres of landscaped property. The main building called the “Old Folks Home” was built in 1926 and has a quaint history behind it.
The two buildings on the property were constructed to serve as living quarter for folks who had no place to stay or no one to care for them. Residents shared in chores and other activities which made for a family atmosphere. An orange grove located on the grounds provided a minimal income, and a vegetable garden and farm animals helped the resident to support themselves.
As the number of resident decline, the remaining ones were placed in the main building and the second building became an infirmary. Both buildings closed in 1964.
In 1982 the building reopened and became known as the Museum of Seminole County History. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
