Pirates of the Caribbean: Bigger and Better
For years the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the Magical Kingdom in Walt Disney World has been a crowd favorite. With the release of the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean movies, the ride has gotten even more popular and now the same movies have inspired a face lift.
Classic Pirates of the Caribbean
The original ride at the Magic Kingdom and other Disney theme parks around the world was the inspiration for the extremely popular movies. Certain scenes from the original ride, created with the Audio-Animatronics®, are found sprinkled throughout the movies. However most of the plot and characters in the movies were fictionalized using the ride only as inspiration.
Now, however, the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction has been updated to incorporate aspects and characters from the movies. The attraction inspired the movies, and now the movies have inspired a major facelift for the ride.
The New Pirates of the Caribbean
The updated ride now features the classic scenes and favorite buccaneers of old as well as Captain Jack Sparrow and his enemy, Barbossa. Sparrow and Barbossa interact with the classic pirates of the ride for a fully new experience. They are not simply added in a new scene but rather are found throughout in a new plot sequence along with dialog. Disney has also added new special effects to the ride. The result is a new and exciting face on a favorite of generations.
Original plans for Walt Disney World in Florida did not include the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction so popular at Disneyland in California. However, it was added in 1973 after guests of the park complained about its absence. Since that time the ride has undergone many changes to become more sensitive and to keep the various scenes updated.
With this latest update, the boat trip takes visitors through the same familiar story, but with a new twist. Captain Jack Sparrow is searching for treasure and appears in this pursuit various times throughout the ride. Barbossa takes a few cannon shots at guests and Davy Jones makes a spectral appearance. Other artifacts from the movies including Aztec gold and Elizabeth Swann’s dress make cameos throughout.
