Orlando Has a Big Heart

Orlando, Florida is a great place to visit but it is also a great place to live. The citizens of Orlando and surrounding areas have come together to help those in need. Just a few of the wonderful projects that are taking place include:

The Nemours Foundation, a national children’s health system, has donated two fully paid college scholarships for the inaugural class of the University of Central Florida: College of Medicine, which will begin in 2009. Each of the awards is for $160,000 and will cover the tuition costs and living expenses of two medical students for four years.

The Baldwin Park Development Co. in Orlando, along with Charles Clayton Construction in Winter Park recently sponsered a party to raise money for Habitat for Humanity Orlando at Tradewinds, the 2008 Builders Magazine Show Home in Baldwin Park. The total amount raised by the charity was $12,175.

Volunteers from the Orlando Magic including Carlos Arroyo, Dwight Howard and Bo Outlaw teamed with others from Central Florida Leased Housing Corp. to build a new playground at the Santa Barbara Apartments in Winter Park.

Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate Cares, the charitable arm of Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate, presented a $25.000 sponsorship check to Habitat for Humanity in Seminole County to help build a home in Sanford.

The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida, the philanthropic affiliate of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, has given a $100,000 grant to the Center for Drug-Free Living, a community-based organization that works to promote healthy and responsible lifestyles for people in Orange, Seminole, Brevard and Osceola counties. The money will be used to help fund the Hepatitis Care Network of Central Florida.

In addition, Community Health Centers Inc. hosted the American Dental Association’s “Give Kids a Smile” campaign in February. About 27 underprivileged children were given free oral health screenings and oral health education. Most of the children were from the Orange County Head Start program. “Give Kids a Smile” is a nationwide dental program with teams of volunteer dentists seeing uninsured patients, ages 3 to 18, on a first-come, first-served basis.
