Orlando Going Green
With all the wonderful nature surrounding Orlando, Florida one might think this area is already green. But the city and many of the attractions within the area are going one better and making environmental protection a key issue and goal.
Hotels and theme parks in the Orlando area are making a conscious effort to improve the quality of life in the area. For example, the Renaissance Orlando Resort at SeaWorld is now putting forth an incredible effort in setting the standard in progressive environmentalism. As a sign of their work, they recently received the One Palm recognition award from Florida’s Green Lodging Program. This program was established by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and it marks this Orlando hotel as an environmental contributor in the hospitality community.
Some of the many challenges that the resort worked on to improve included water conservation efforts, energy efficient improvements, improved towel and linen replacement systems, and many other changes. All in all, they spent millions of dollars to improve their site and their in-house actions.
According to research conducted by VISIT FLORIDA, 83.6 million people visit the state every year. Over half of those visiting will stay in a hotel or motel, thus making hotels that are working to decrease their carbon footprints a highly sought-after commodity.
But this effort goes beyond the hotel industry itself. Many of the local merchants and vendors are also pitching in to make the city and the surrounding area more environmentally friendly. Aside from the fact that this is one of America’s most ecologically diverse areas, residents of the area are also aware of their global identity as one of the most popular tourist destinations on the east coast. Those who live and work within the area are proud of their environmental achievements and hope to continue making a positive impact as they move forward.
As one might imagine, the theme parks and larger industries are leading the way, but that does not mean that smaller attractions are not doing their part as well. Many of the less well known attractions in Orlando are dependant on the natural surroundings and are therefore committed to keeping the air and land clean.
The next time you visit Orlando, take some time to enjoy the work and effort being put into the environment. You might be impressed at how effective these efforts have been.
