Orlando Florida Employment

Orlando, Florida is one of the world’s premier tourist and vacation destinations but it is also a great place to live year round. Some good news came out recently concerning jobs in the area. Central Florida’s unemployment rate dipped slightly in April, even while the state’s seasonally adjusted rate remains constant.

For Orlando in particular, the Orlando metropolitan area posted an unemployment rate of 4.4 percent for the month, down from 4.6 percent in March. This is still above the 3.4 percent rate recorded in April 2007, according to Workforce Central Florida reports.

For the surrounding areas, a county-by-county break down shows that Brevard posted the highest rate at 5.1 percent, down from 5.3 percent. The rates at other counties were: Orange, 4.3 percent April, 4.4 percent March; Osceola, 4.7 percent April, 5 percent March; Seminole 4.2 percent April, 4.4 percent March; Lake, 4.8 percent April, 5.1 percent March; and Volusia, 5 percent April, 5.2 percent March.

Statewide in Florida, the unemployment level remained constant at 4.9 percent, while the nationwide rate came in at 5 percent, down from 5.1 percent.

During the last 12 months, the industries losing the most jobs in Central Florida were construction, 5,100 jobs or 6.3 percent; manufacturing, 1,200 jobs or 2.8 percent; and finance/insurance, 900 jobs or 2.3 percent.

The industries gaining the most jobs in the region over that time span were arts/entertainment/recreation, 2.300 jobs or 3.8 percent; wholesale trade, 1,200 jobs or 2.6 percent; and education and health services, 2,600 jobs or 2.3 percent.

For those considering a move to the Orlando area, the employment news is good. As with all sectors, some markets may have a higher rate of unemployment than others, but with new construction taking place in Orlando on what seems to be a daily basis, the outlook seems good for this wonderful city.
