One Of Florida’s Most Unique Attractions
Florida has a lot to see that no other area of the United States can boast of having. There’s one place, however, that just may surpass all the others when it comes to seeing first-hand the unique natural beauty of Florida; the spectacular caverns at Florida Caverns State Park.
For a fee, you can take a guided tour of one of these spectacular caverns, and see the magnificently formed stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, rimstones and columns that make up the beauty of this cavern. These natural formations were ten thousand years in the making, and are more delicate than the finest china. One light touch from a human finger could send these formations crashing to the cavern floor, never to be seen again.
There are other caves in the area, but all of them either require special permits to enter or are strictly off limits except for research purposes. You can see just how magnificent and intriguing this area is. All visitors are asked to respect the restrictions placed on the caverns and do not enter any of them. There’s a lot to see outside the caverns anyways.
The park boasts a whopping 1,300 acres and is home to many different plants and animals. Dogwood trees, southern magnolias and white oaks litter the park’s grounds. Woodpeckers and barred owls make the trees their home, and the alligators, turtles and beavers occupy the ground area and the beautiful Chipola River, which flows underground at the river sink and then mysteriously reappears hundreds of feet down river. As such a natural bridge is formed out of the land that sits atop the part of the river that is buried beneath the surface.
Cave tours are available on Sundays, Monday, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The caves are closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
