Golf in Orlando
There’s one thing an avid golfer never forgets to take on vacation with them; the desire to play their beloved game of golf. And, for the golf enthusiast that’s vacationing in the Orlando area of Florida, there are more than 179 golf courses within an hour’s drive to choose from.
One of the most prestigious courses is the infamous Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge. This course has an 18-hole course with 7,207 total yardage, a third set of 9-holes and wide-open fairways. Golf Digest includes this course as one of Florida’s top golf courses.
Another great course to take a few swings on is the ChampionsGate Golf Club. This club has two 18-hole courses that were personally designed by Greg Norman. American-style golf can be played on the 5,150 yard National Course, while the 5,618 yard course offers links-style golf that is reminiscent of the world-renowned courses found in the British Isles. ChampionsGate is also the world-headquarters of the David Leadbetter’s Golf Academy. David Leadbetter was voted the second-best instructor in the nation by Golf Digest in 2005.
If you’d rather keep your clubs in your bag, and watch how the professionals do it, you can attend The Arnold Palmer Invitational that takes place each March or the Walt Disney Classic that tees off each October. There’s also the Ginn Open that is held annually in April, and is one of the most anticipated events on the entire LPGA tour. Your bound to see some of the most recognized names in the sport, including Arnold Palmer, Se Ri Pak and, yes, Tiger Woods.
Orlando boasts more than 300 days of sunshine every year so there’s a lot of leeway for planning a golf-oriented vacation. Many of Orlando’s courses have been designed by professional golfers/architects like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicholas and Tom Watson. And, if you don’t want to bring your clubs with you there’s a drove of pro shops that can set you up with everything you’ll need.
