Fastpass - Ride Without the Wait
In 1999, the Walt Disney Company introduced a fantastic system called Fastpass. This system allows guests to reserve a place in line for a particular attraction without actually standing in line.
How Does the Fastpass System Work?
At each attraction that offers the Fastpass service ( and not all do ), there are machines located at the front of the attraction. Above these machines are signs with clocks showing what times the Fastpasses are currently being issued for, as well as the current wait time for those without Fastpasses, or the standby time.
How Do I Use Fastpass?
Let’s suppose your group wants to ride Space Mountain. It’s 10:00 am when you arrive at the entrance to the attraction. The standby wait time indicated is 70 minutes. Fastpasses are currently being issued for a return time of 12:00-1:00pm. Rather than waiting more than an hour, your group can get Fastpasses and then visit another area of the park, ride other attractions with shorter wait times, do some shopping, grab a snack, whatever you like. Then return to Space Mountain anytime between 12 and 1:00pm and enter the fastpass line. Your wait will usually be less than 10 minutes, regardless of the standy time.
How Do I Get a Fastpass?
To get a Fastpass for an attraction, simply slide your park admission ticket into the Fastpass kiosk at the front of the attraction. A Fastpass will be printed and your admission ticket returned. Hang on to the Fastpass because you’ll need to show it to a cast member upon your return in order to enter the Fastpass line. It’s that simple!
What’s the Catch?
Sound like a great system? It is, and it’s absolutely free to all park guests. But there is one drawback you should be aware of. Each guest can only hold one Fastpass at a time. Don’t plan on running to each Fastpass attraction, collecting your passes for the day. It doesn’t work that way. Each Fastpass will indicate the time you will be able to get another Fastpass. This is usually the same time as your current pass is usable. In other words, in the example given above, the next Fastpass would most likely be available after 12:00 pm.
There is some talk that there may be some changes in the works for the Fastpass system, according to this report from the Orlando Sentinel. We’ll keep you informed of any changes as more details become available.
