Alligators, Eagles, And Bears…Oh My!
One of the many reasons to spend the day at DeLeon Springs includes the wildlife. Take a hike on the Wild Persimmon Trail; the complete hike is four miles long, but even a stroll through part of the hike will put you in touch with nature. The trail meanders through an oak hammock, flood plain forest, and abandoned agricultural fields. You may see deer, turkey, and other creatures that call this area home; Florida black bears have been reported too.
Book reservations on the Eco/History Boat Tour; this 50 minute tour on the Spring Garden Run will give you a great background of this pristine area. You will have an opportunity to learn about and see alligators, bald eagles, assorted water fowl, and more!
Are you a bird watcher? Well, be sure to pack your binoculors so you can see all the beautiful birds that flock to the area. This is a great opportunity to add unique fowl to your list.
Water Play
Be sure to pack your bathing suit; so you can enjoy the swimming area. The water temperature is usually at least 72 degrees, so it is sure to refresh you. Soak up some sun and spend some time in the water.
Do you want to discover the area on your own? How about paddling around? Well, the state park offers rentals of canoes, kayaks, or paddleboats; so you are sure to find a craft that fits your speed.
Take It Down A Notch
Wander around the newly renovated visitor’s center which features several exhibits on the park’s 6,000 year history. You will learn about the Seminole Indians, wildlife, and history that surround these areas. Pull up a seat and watch a DVD presentation on the Florida Springs, St. John’s River, and the Everglades.
Ready To Eat?
There are several picnic areas for you to enjoy a basket lunch; pull up some shade and take in the sights and sounds of the park. Are you in the mood for some pancakes? Well, the Old Spanish Sugar Mill Restaurant can fill that order. You can make your own pancakes at your table or choose one of the many lunch items on their menu.
DeLeon Springs State Park is clearly a great time for everyone. There are wheelchairs and off road wheelchairs available for those in need, and there are paved paths to make it easier for some.
