DeBary Hall
If you’re in Central Florida, and you want to set some time aside to see a piece of the past, you need to make a stop at the famous DeBary Hall located in Cassadaga, Florida.
DeBary Hall, built in 1870, was once the summer retreat of the wealthy, European wine merchant, Fredrick deBarry. The estate was used mainly for the merchant’s avid hunting excursions, but was also used to entertain his prominent and wealthy guests. It remained in the family up until 1941 when the last family heir died. Today it is a beautiful example of old architecture, which the public can experience.
Located in the St. John’s River region, the main house, a work of Victorian art, is 8,000 square feet and sits on 10 acres of land. A far cry from the 6,000 acres it once was. The house has been magnificently restored, and the stables and other outbuildings are still standing, as well as the tenant house. This building is believed to be older than the main house, and it’s speculated that it was where the original owner of the property lived before selling a piece of it to DeBarry.
The Visitor’s Center offers a unique glimpse into the history of this estate through the Imagidome Theater which presents a recap of the history of the estate and the people who lived and worked there, and an overview of the St. John’s River region. There’s also a gift shop where you’ll find many unique items for purchase. If you really want to get a feel for the St. John River region then take a leisurely walk along the spring-to-spring trail that visitors are welcomed to traverse.
The estate and the grounds are a true glimpse into a part of Central Florida’s past, and will be a memorable experience for all who visit here.
