Coral Castle
Carved stone, enormous structures and unrequited love make up this unique attraction in central Florida. Coral Castle is a great place to visit while on vacation.
Located in Homestead, Florida; Coral Castle’s story is just as amazing as the building itself. Built over 60 years ago by Ed Leedskalnin, Coral Castle was his tribute to a woman he truly loved. Ed was smitten by Agnes Scuffs, a young woman he was infatuated with, but whose love was never returned.
Apparently, Ed carved the structures with homemade tools made from junk. He carved all the structures without help from anyone! Also, the story goes that no one remembers the construction process; it seems as if it was erected overnight! There was even talk that Ed may have had super natural powers or new the secrets to build like the ancient Egyptians.
Now, people often wondered how Ed could have maintained a living while building his creation. Well, Ed Leedskalnin used the curiosities of others to make a living. He would charge interested parties 10 cents to peek at the inside of his memorial. He would guide viewers through the castle and gardens explaining his thoughts and building strategies.
Ed has baffled scientists since 1923; no one can figure out he was able to construct such an awesome creation without human help! It took 28 years to build the castle and grounds and Ed died while building this memorial of love.
What ever happened to Agnes? Was she impressed with Ed’s monument of love? Well, to get the full story you should visit the castle and grounds; but word has it that she never did accept an invitation to the castle.
Today, you can visit the castle and grounds while enjoying a self-guided/audio tour. You can hear of the story and learn how Ed was able to produce such an awesome structure. There are entrance fees for all ages and the castle grounds are open year round.
Ed Leedskalnin was obsessed with young Agnes, he built this monument in her honor, and at the time it is sure that he never expected the national attention that it would receive or that it would secure a spot on the National Register of Historical Places.
