Blue Springs State Park
One of the best places in Florida to see first-hand the manatees that make it their home, is Blue Spring State Park. Blue Spring State Park is the largest spring on the St. Johns River, and has been designated as one of only a few refuges for the manatee.
From mid-November through March of each year, a huge number of West Indian manatees call Blue Spring State Park their home away from home. The river’s temperature starts to drop which signals the manatees that it’s time to head for the spring. You can come and see these graceful swimmers as they meander around in the spring. You can also see the birdlife that make their annual migration to this serene part of the state. This time of year isn’t bustling with crowds of tourists, but instead is a wonderfully peaceful place that offers a beautiful piece of Florida’s natural beauty.
There is absolutely no swimming with the manatees. However, once they’ve had their little hiatus from the cold river and return to it when the temperatures start to rise again, it’s perfectly fine for anyone that wishes to put on their swim gear and enjoy the spring’s warm waters. You might consider taking in a little snorkeling or scuba diving (partners only) as well as tubing, fishing or a nice canoe ride along the river.
There are plenty of areas for picnics so bring along some friends and chow. There are also some of the best hiking trails in the area available to all who wish to take a quiet walk and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
Blue Springs State Park is one of those places that can be visited in both the on and off season, and be thoroughly enjoyable no matter which one you choose.
