A Midnight Stroll - Greenwood Cemetary

Different strokes for different folks; that’s one reason why the Greenwood Cemetery has become a place where more and more visitors come each years while vacationing in Orlando. You wouldn’t normally think of adding a cemetery to your itinerary list, but this one is like none other.

The rolling hills are like a plush green carpet inviting you to sit down and stay awhile. The flowers are brilliant when in bloom and the air is refreshing. History buffs will enjoy the historical gravesites while the outdoor enthusiasts can take a hike around the vast grounds or an easy jog around the Greenwood Urban Wetlands that abut the cemetery.
The wetlands offer lakes to wander by, bridges to cross over and sunshine to bask in. Many health enthusiasts that visit the Orlando area find the wetlands to be an ideal place to get in an early-morning jog when the world is still sleeping. It’s a perfect time for running with nature.

The historic cemetery is owned by the city of Orlando, which hosts a moonlight stroll through the beautiful 100-acre grounds. Although there is no fee for the stroll, which covers approximately 4 miles, donations are kindly appreciated to help defray the cost of replacing some 140 tree that were lost in various hurricanes. There are over 100 gravesites of notables from Orlando’s past buried here, and hundreds of graves, some adorned with intricately carved statues.

The cemetery was established in 1880, when eight residents decided it was time to create a resting place for their loved ones within their own community. Until that time, people were buried in graveyards located in nearby townships.
The original cemetery encompassed 24 acres. Over the years, the town has expanded its boarders to the current 100 acre grounds it is today.

The moonlight tours are open to the public, but are only hosted at certain times throughout the year. They are limited to parties of 50 so be sure to call ahead and reserve a seat. (407-246-2616) However, the cemetery is open daily from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm for the public’s convenience.
